itinerary

Akwaaba (Welcome)

Days 1 - 2 (Cape Coast)

Arriving in Ghana on the first day at the Kotoka International Airport, we would continue our journey by bus 3hrs west of the capital to Cape Coast where we will be lodging for the next few days. We would allow for rest after dinner.

Rising to the morning sun on the second day, we would spend time introducing ourselves properly to each other and preparing ourselves for the group trip by way of orientations. On this day, we would also visit the dungeons in acknowledgement of Afrikan lives taken through its this dark monument.

Time would also be spent by the ocean later in the evening after dinner participating in a drumming and dancing session done by a local dance group.

On the morning of the third day, having had breakfast we would begin our journey back to the capital, Accra to partake in the Ancestral Wall celebration. On the way, we would make a stop at the Kakum National Park taking a walk on planks amongst the trees and learning about the medicinal plants in this conserved forest.

Ancestral Wall Celebration

Days 3- 4 (Prampram | Accra)

We will arrive at the Ancestral Wall mid-afternoon of the third day and settle in to our accommodation. We meet later for group dinner before settling back in for rest.

The fourth day will see us partake in the Ancestral Wall Celebration. Here, we see local school children in a ritual drama take on the essence of Ancestors come and gone reenacting their lives and having conversations amongst themselves. The celebrations also bring together Afrikans globally and it is a great time to network and make some new friends.

Organic Farming & Sustainable Building

Days 5 - 7 (KASI, Liate Wote, Volta Region)

On the morning of the 5th day, having had breakfast, we would begin our 5hr bus ride to the Kweku Andoh Sustainability Institute in the Volta region of Ghana where our conference would be held. The Volta Region is known for its lush green tropical forest, mountains and waterfalls.

Arriving in the Volta Region at the Kweku Andoh Sustainability Institute (KASI), we would have dinner and check ourselves into our rooms after a brief introduction to the space and spelling out of ground rules.

The rest of our time here would be laced practical workshops around sustainable farming and indigenous building creating the space for hands-on learning.  We would also visit Tagbo Waterfalls (one of the well-hidden waterfalls in Ghana) and Afadjato (the tallest mountain in Ghana). Bring your hiking shoes and be prepared to be well immersed in the natural environment.

Rest in the Mountains

Days 8 - 9 (Tutu)

Tutu is one of the seven original towns of the Akuapem Kingdom. The Akuapem Kingdom sits on the mountain ranges, an hour north of Accra. It is noted for its scenery, greenery, fresh and chilly air. Arriving at Tutu, after a four hour trip, we will settle into our various accommodations.

During the period here, while allowing for rest we would also engage some of the sights of the Akuapem Mountains. This will include the Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine where we will learn about Ghana’s efforts into regularization and making safe plant medicines. There will also be several herbal products available for purchase. We would also make a trip into the Aburi Botanical Gardens for a walk through nature and lunch/dinner.

Homestays & Indigenous Earth-building

Days 10 - 13 (Kazigu, Upper East Region)

On the morning of the 10th day, we would hop on a domestic flight an hour away to the northern part of Ghana. The northern part of Ghana is going to feel radically different from the southern part of the country characterized by dry heat, savannah landscape, more rural and slow paced living, motorbikes and tricycles as main transport etc. During our time here, we would be immersing ourselves culturally through homestays by living with families in earth houses. But prior to settling into our accommodations, we would do a visit to the Paga Crocodile pond to engage the interrelationship between the people living in the area and crocodiles.

The morning of the 11th day, after breakfast with our families. Here, we would meet with the Chief and introduce ourselves to the community. We will visit the AK hub worksite to learn about how to build indigenous earth buildings without any need for cement or modern building materials. This would also be our engagement on the 12th day but we would also include engagements with women producing shea butter and farmers in cooperatives.

Luvemba (Dis-orientation & Departures)

Days 14 - 16 (Tutu; Accra)

We return back to the south on the 14th day. For the time remaining, we would debrief on our trip sharing learnings and there would be time for final shopping and connections before departing to our various destinations on the 16th day. It is our only hope you had a wonderful time.

Accommodations

Our time will be split into several styles of accommodation, from sharing guest houses to dorm-style hostels, eco-lodges and tent style livin’. Immersing ourselves in various local communities, we’ll certainly feel the warmth from welcoming Afrikan=Black families. Although accommodation varies from place to place, everywhere we stay will be a safe and comfortable place to lay your head!
